JAYAPURA — A prominent religious leader in Papua, Pastor Benny Giay, has urged the public to maintain security and public order (kamtibmas) ahead of the 2025 Christmas and the 2026 New Year celebrations.
Giay emphasized that the season should be observed with simplicity and filled with positive activities that reflect the values of love and brotherhood. His main focus is ensuring that all celebrations across the Land of Papua take place safely, peacefully, and solemnly.
“I appeal to all Papuans to continue maintaining public security and order so that the celebrations can be safe and peaceful,” the pastor said on December 21, 2025.
“Let us celebrate Christmas and the New Year with joy, but without excess.”
Beyond maintaining local stability, Pastor Benny also called on Papuans to show empathy toward communities in Sumatra affected by natural disasters. According to him, this year’s Christmas should become a moment of social concern, where joy is accompanied by respect and solidarity for fellow citizens who are grieving.
Such solidarity, he said, is an important expression of inclusive humanitarian values.
“We honor our brothers and sisters who are mourning due to disasters,” he stated.
Pastor Benny also warned the public to remain vigilant and not be easily provoked by issues that could potentially divide unity. He stressed that social harmony in Papua must be safeguarded by avoiding unverified or misleading information.
For him, December is a time to deepen faith, not to be marked by actions that disrupt public order.
“Do not be easily swayed by issues that can divide society. Let us keep Papua peaceful and harmonious,” he said.
He further invited all elements of society—ranging from traditional leaders and youth to security forces—to work together in creating a conducive environment. This cross-sector collaboration is expected to ensure that Christmas and New Year celebrations in Papua remain peaceful and harmonious.
With a spirit of togetherness, it is hoped that all people can welcome the turn of the year within a strong framework of unity.
