Jayapura – Papua Governor Matius Fakhiri has stressed that Indigenous communities must be positioned as key actors in determining the direction of development in Papua, rather than merely serving as beneficiaries of development programs.
“Indigenous communities are not merely beneficiaries of development, but are important actors in determining the direction of development in Papua,” Fakhiri said on the sidelines of the Third Conference of Indigenous Communities and the First Youth Conference of the Mamta-Tabi Region, held in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, on Wednesday.
According to Fakhiri, Papua’s progress should not be measured solely by physical infrastructure development and economic growth. Development must go hand in hand with the protection of human dignity, respect for customary laws and cultural heritage, and the sustainability of land, forests, and natural resources.
He expressed his appreciation to the Mamta-Tabi Regional Council of the Papua Customary Council, the organizing committee, and all parties involved in initiating the conference as part of efforts to strengthen the role of Indigenous communities in regional development.
Fakhiri explained that the conference serves as a platform for Indigenous communities and young people to consolidate their efforts and discuss the future of the Tabi region. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen their shared commitment to protecting Indigenous rights and preserving natural resources.
He further emphasized the importance of positioning Indigenous youth as a driving force for change, capable of safeguarding their cultural identity while adapting to the challenges and developments of the modern era.
According to him, the involvement of younger generations is essential to ensuring that customary values remain preserved and continue to serve as a foundation for addressing future development challenges.
Fakhiri expressed hope that the conference would go beyond discussions and produce concrete recommendations and collective commitments that could be translated into practical actions.
Through these efforts, the conference is expected to strengthen the position of Indigenous communities in the development process and ensure that Papua’s progress remains firmly grounded in respect for customary rights, cultural preservation, and environmental protection.
