Jayapura – The Papua representative office of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) was targeted by a terror attack involving a Molotov cocktail. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 9, 2026, at approximately 10:15 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time) in the Jalan Sua Siao area, Dok V Bawah, North Jayapura District, Jayapura City.
Preliminary information indicates that a suspected perpetrator riding a motor vehicle was seen throwing a bottle containing flammable material into the office’s courtyard. Fortunately, the Molotov cocktail did not explode, resulting in no casualties or severe damage to the building.
The Head of the Papua Komnas HAM representative office, Frits Ramanday, strongly condemned the act, describing it as a serious form of terror against a state institution. He noted that the fact the incident took place in broad daylight demonstrated the perpetrator’s audacity, a matter that requires a thorough investigation.
“This is an act of terror directed at Komnas HAM. And this is a serious crime,” said Frits Ramanday at the scene.
As the regional head of Komnas HAM, Frits insisted that the perpetrator must be identified and arrested immediately. He emphasized the importance of law enforcement to create a deterrent effect and ensure the institution’s security while carrying out its functions.
“We will coordinate immediately with the police to ensure the perpetrator is arrested,” he stated.
For Ramanday, apprehending the perpetrator is a crucial step toward breaking the chain of crime and preventing future acts of terror against Komnas HAM, the national institution dedicated to protecting human rights.
At the time of writing, Frits hopes the police will promptly conduct an investigation and identify the perpetrator by examining CCTV footage from the area surrounding the incident. (Richard Mayor)
