Papua Pegunungan Legislature Urges Use of Special Autonomy Funds for Residents’ Relocation

Wamena– Commission II of the Papua Pegunungan Provincial Legislative Council (DPR Papua Pegunungan) has urged the regional government to utilize Special Autonomy (Otsus) funds to support the relocation and reconstruction of homes for residents affected by inter-communal conflict in Jayawijaya Regency.

Commission II member Festus M Asso said a number of residents had lost their homes after houses were burned during the conflict. Some affected families are still staying at temporary evacuation sites and need certainty regarding safe and adequate housing.

According to Festus, Special Autonomy funds could be optimized to help meet the needs of affected communities, including providing housing for residents who lost their homes due to conflict or natural disasters.

He said the government needs to take concrete steps to ensure affected residents can return to normal life. The use of Special Autonomy funds, he added, could serve as one of the instruments for addressing social challenges faced by communities in Papua Pegunungan.

Commission II of the Papua Pegunungan legislature will continue encouraging the regional government to ensure sustainable assistance for affected residents, enabling them to obtain safe and adequate housing and resume their daily activities.
