Jayapura – The Jayapura Regency Government (Pemkab) continues to strengthen regional food security through various strategic steps, ranging from the supervision of basic material prices in the market to increasing local food production. These efforts are carried out to maintain the purchasing power of the community, ensure the availability of basic needs, and control the rate of inflation in Jayapura Regency.
One of the steps taken is to intensify the sudden inspection (sidak) in traditional and modern markets. The activity aims to monitor price development, ensure the availability of basic material stocks, as well as identify potential price increases that can have an impact on the community.
The Head of the Jayapura Regency Food Security Office, Elvina Situmorang, said that market monitoring is carried out periodically in all development areas I to IV as part of the effort to maintain the stability of supply and food prices.
“The implementation of sidak is carried out to find out the development of basic material prices in all development areas I to IV, as well as ensure the availability of stock so that the needs of the community are still met and regional inflation can be controlled,” said Elvina in Jayapura, Thursday.
In addition to supervising the distribution sector, the Jayapura Regency Government also encourages an increase in local food production through the empowerment of farmer groups. One of the programs carried out was the distribution of assistance of 3,500 laying hens and feed to farmer groups in the Doyo, Nimbokrang, and Sentani regions.
The program is expected to be able to increase egg production in Jayapura Regency so that the needs of the community can be met from local livestock products. With the increase in production in the region, dependence on supplies from outside Papua is expected to continue to decrease.
“We target by the end of 2026 Jayapura Regency to be able to achieve egg self-sufficiency up to 60 percent so that the needs of the community can be met from local production and no longer depend on supplies from outside the region,” he explained.
To maintain price stability sustainably, the Food Security Service also strengthens cooperation with distributors and regularly holds cheap food activities in a number of locations. This step aims to ensure that the community obtains staples at affordable prices while maintaining a balance between supply and demand in the market.
Through a combination of price control, strengthening local production, and synergy with various stakeholders, the Jayapura Regency Government is optimistic that regional food security will become stronger. The effort is expected to not only be able to maintain the stability of the price of basic necessities, but also to improve the welfare of local farmers and ranchers and strengthen food independence in Jayapura Regency.
