Wamena – The Papua Regional Police have called on communities across Highland Papua to refrain from using tribal conflicts as a means of resolving disputes, emphasizing that lasting peace is essential for maintaining security and accelerating regional development.
Papua Police Liaison Officer for Highland Papua, Senior Commissioner Andi Y. Enoch, stated that the tribal conflict that occurred in Jayawijaya Regency some time ago should serve as a final chapter, with similar incidents not recurring in Wamena or other parts of Highland Papua.
According to him, disputes and disagreements within society should be addressed through legal mechanisms and constructive dialogue rather than retaliatory actions or tribal warfare, which often result in loss of life and significant property damage.
“We hope that communities will increasingly rely on the rule of law when resolving disputes. Legal processes provide accountability and serve as a deterrent to future violations,” he said.
Enoch explained that post-conflict reconciliation efforts have already been carried out through customary and legal channels. A traditional peace ceremony, marked by the symbolic breaking of weapons, was conducted at the Jayawijaya Police Headquarters and witnessed by government officials, security leaders, and regional authorities.
He noted that the peace agreement should become a turning point for strengthening unity, fostering mutual respect among tribes, and promoting harmonious coexistence throughout Highland Papua.
Furthermore, he stressed that public security and social stability are crucial foundations for sustainable development. A peaceful environment enables the government to implement programs more effectively in key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, education, healthcare, and economic development.
“We encourage all members of the community to work together in maintaining security and social harmony so that development initiatives can continue and bring tangible benefits to the people of Highland Papua,” Enoch added.
The Papua Regional Police reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace and stability throughout Highland Papua through law enforcement, dialogue, and close cooperation with customary leaders, religious figures, community representatives, and local governments.
