Wamena, Highland Papua – The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas, has confirmed a special housing program aimed at providing homes for tribal leaders and Indigenous Papuans (OAP) in Highland Papua.
The program targets the construction of approximately 2,200 housing units, consisting of 2,000 units for local communities and 200 units specifically designated for tribal chiefs. The initiative is intended not only to improve living standards but also to recognize the important role of traditional leaders in maintaining social and cultural structures.
This policy follows directives from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who has emphasized the need to accelerate development and improve welfare in Papua’s mountainous regions.
The housing development will be carried out in phases across eight regencies in Highland Papua, prioritizing areas with the most urgent housing needs. Authorities will take into account geographical challenges as well as local conditions to ensure effective implementation.
Unlike regular housing programs, this initiative is based on a special Presidential Instruction scheme, allowing for tailored regulations and mechanisms. These include beneficiary selection, culturally appropriate housing designs, and strict supervision to ensure the program reaches its intended targets.
Through this effort, the government aims to provide decent housing, strengthen indigenous social structures, and promote equitable development in Highland Papua, particularly in remote areas that have long faced limited access to basic infrastructure.
