Jayapura – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has mapped 200 potential locations for the Red and White Fishermen’s Village (KNMP) in five provinces in Papua.
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in a coordination meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday, stated that of these locations, 184 have been proposed for development by 2026.
He stated that the provinces being focused on are Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, South Papua, and Central Papua.
This program is part of the broader target of developing 1,000 KNMP locations across Indonesia by 2026.
Trenggono emphasized that the determination of development locations is based on fishing activities and clear land status.
“The key is the number one location. Number two is the land area. The minimum land area should be more than 500 square meters, preferably 1,000 square meters, unless the hub can be larger. Third, we’ll map out road access,” he said, as quoted in a press release from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
He explained that the development of the KNMP in Papua will use an integrated cluster system, connecting fishermen with supporting KNMPs, KNMP Hubs, cluster centers, and distribution to a wider market.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, he continued, will also involve cross-sector collaboration, including regional governments, the Indonesian Navy, and the Attorney General’s Office, to ensure the program’s oversight and success.
“So, I think we must work together to make the KNMP a success. The hope is that in five years, there will be no slum fishing villages,” he said.
This development plan is targeted to be finalized by the end of 2026.
Through the KNMP, the government hopes that the Papuan people will be able to manage marine resources independently and sustainably, while simultaneously improving the welfare of fishermen in eastern Indonesia.
Of the 1,000 KNMPs targeted for construction this year, 11 KNMPs have been completed and will begin operations at the end of January 2026.
