Jayapura — Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri has announced a new strategic direction for the province, positioning Papua as Indonesia’s key gateway to the Pacific region. The statement was delivered during a meeting with diplomatic representatives and regional stakeholders.
on Friday 12 Desember, Fakhiri emphasized that Papua’s geographic location—sharing a direct border with Papua New Guinea and lying within the Pacific connectivity corridor—offers a strategic advantage that must be maximized. He noted that Papua should not be viewed solely as Indonesia’s eastern boundary, but as a forward-facing region capable of strengthening Indonesia’s presence among Pacific nations.
“We want Papua to stand as Indonesia’s representative in the Pacific, carrying a positive image and opening broader opportunities for cooperation,” Fakhiri said.
To support this vision, the Papua Provincial Government is preparing concrete measures focusing on economic diplomacy, trade cooperation, education, health, and investment development.
Collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands plays a vital role in expanding regional partnerships.
Fakhiri explained that improving cross-border connectivity—through optimized seaports, airports, and transportation links to neighboring countries—will form the backbone of Indonesia–Pacific engagement through Papua. The provincial government is also prioritizing stability, security, and accelerated development in border areas to strengthen this strategic initiative.
He expressed hope that this effort will help showcase Papua as a safe, progressive, and open region for investors and international partners in the Pacific.
“With strong support from all stakeholders, Papua is ready to become a strategic point connecting Indonesia with Pacific countries,” Fakhiri concluded.
