Jayapura, October 23, 2025 — Hamadi-Tobati Tribal Chief Timotius Hamadi has urged the public to remain calm and avoid emotional reactions following the destruction of confiscated evidence — a Bird-of-Paradise headdress — by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Papua.
In his statement delivered in Portumbai, Tobati Village, on Thursday (Oct. 23), Timotius said he was shocked upon learning about the burning of the traditional headdress, which has long been regarded as a symbol of identity and pride for the indigenous Papuan people.
“We were surprised that such a thing could happen. However, we understand that it was done in the interest of conservation and law enforcement,” Timotius said.
He emphasized the importance of dialogue and consultation between indigenous communities and relevant authorities to prevent misunderstandings in the future. According to him, all issues can be resolved peacefully without triggering social unrest.
“We need to sit together, discuss the causes, and find the best solutions. The community should not respond with emotion — every problem can be resolved through discussion,” he added.
Timotius also reminded the public not to be easily provoked by misinformation circulating on social media, especially content that could incite anger or cause division.
“I urge the people, particularly in Tobati Village, not to believe rumors spreading on Facebook or other platforms. Please wait for official information from tribal leaders,” he said.
Closing his remarks, the Hamadi-Tobati chief underscored the importance of maintaining peace and unity in Papua. He called on residents to support the government’s efforts to preserve public order and harmony.
“Papua is already peaceful and safe. Let us continue to protect that. We should seek solutions together, not through emotion. I hope everyone remains calm and continues to safeguard peace in Jayapura,” Timotius concluded.
