Papuan Religious Leader Urges Peace Following Inauguration of New Governor

Jayapura, October 7, 2025 – A prominent Papuan religious leader, Rev. Dr. Yones Wenda, who also serves as Secretary General of the Kingmi Papua Synod, has called on the public to remain calm and not be provoked in the aftermath of the official inauguration of Papua’s new governor and deputy governor.

The appeal came after the Constitutional Court (MK) rejected the legal challenge filed by candidate pair Benhur Tomi Mano and Constan Karma, thereby confirming the victory of Mathius Fakhiri and Aryoko Rumaropen.

Today, Fakhiri and Rumaropen were officially sworn in as Governor and Deputy Governor of Papua, marking the start of their leadership in steering development programs across the province.

According to Wenda, the court ruling and the completion of the electoral process signify the final stage of Papua’s local election. “The election process has been concluded by the Papua Election Commission and the Papua Regional House of Representatives, followed by today’s inauguration. That means the process is final,” he emphasized.

He warned citizens against being swayed by groups attempting to stir conflict. “I urge the people to be wise and not sacrifice Papua’s peace and security for the sake of provocation,” he said.

Wenda further called on fellow religious figures and church leaders to guide their congregations in maintaining peace. “We all have a role to play. Protect unity, protect Jayapura, keep Papua peaceful. This land is where we live and where we raise the next generation,” he stated.

He concluded by stressing the importance of collective responsibility. “Let us all work together to safeguard Papua so it remains safe and peaceful,” Wenda said.
