Papua’s Garda Cancels Candlelight Vigil, Citing Risk of Exploitation

Jayapura – A planned candlelight vigil organized by the Papua chapter of the United Motorcycle Alliance (Garda) has been officially called off. Action coordinator Dimas stated the decision was made to help maintain security and public order in Papua.

“With this, I declare that we, Garda Papua, will not carry out the action because the current security situation in Papua is stable,” Dimas said in a press statement on Sunday (Aug. 31).

He explained that the decision came after field reports indicated the demonstration might be exploited by irresponsible groups.

“We do not want our movement to be taken advantage of by individuals who have no genuine interest in contributing to Papua’s development,” he stressed.

Dimas also expressed his appreciation to all members and supporters who had prepared for the event, adding that he hoped Papua’s peaceful situation would continue.
