Jakarta, June 6, 2025 — Deputy Speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia, Yorrys Raweyai, emphasized that efforts to resolve conflict in Papua — particularly amid escalating violence between security forces and armed groups — must take into account input from local governments and community stakeholders.
According to Yorrys, a centrally driven security approach that focuses on deploying non-organic troops risks worsening the social situation in conflict areas. He stressed the importance of involving local governments, as they best understand the region’s characteristics and the needs of its people.
“The deployment of non-organic forces should be based on considerations from the community and local governments, because they are the ones who truly understand the local conditions and needs,” Yorrys said when contacted from Jakarta on Thursday (6/6).
He made the statement after visiting Central Papua during the parliamentary recess period to gather public input from various groups.
As a senator representing the Central Papua electoral district, Yorrys expressed deep concern over the intensifying armed conflict in several regencies, including Puncak, Puncak Jaya, Intan Jaya, Paniai, and Dogiyai. He noted that the situation has instilled widespread fear among local residents.
“People are living under psychological stress, and many have been forced to flee their homes for safety,” he added.
Yorrys urged the central government to prioritize a more dialogical and humanistic approach in addressing the situation in Papua, and to strengthen coordination between central and regional authorities in developing a security strategy that is more contextual and sustainable.
