Jakarta – The Ministry of Human Rights (HAM) considered forming an investigative team into the fatal shooting of US pilot Nicholas F. Goselin and the death of pregnant woman Melkiana Duwita in Intan Jaya, Central Papua, but the idea was shelved. Why? Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto said the investigative team was not formed because the police were already handling the two cases.
“Previously, we considered the need to form an investigative team. But earlier, the Assistant Chief of Operations, Commissioner General Fadil Imran, explained that the process is being handled comprehensively, so there is no need to form an investigative team,” Mugiyanto said at the Ministry of Human Rights office in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7/2026).
Echoing the Deputy Minister of Human Rights, the Principal Assistant to the Chief of Police for Operations (Astamaops), Commissioner General Fadil Imran, stated that an additional team is not yet needed because the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) continue to collaborate in the field to enforce the law regarding the incident.
“There’s no need to form an additional team because the collaboration between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in the field, particularly in law enforcement, to identify the perpetrators, is already going well,” said Fadil. He added that the Carstensz Peace Task Force is currently working to find the suspect.
“I don’t think there’s a need for (an additional investigative team). The teams from the Carstensz Peace Operation Task Force and the Law Enforcement Task Force are already working. It’s just a matter of coordinating technical matters on the ground to find the suspect,” he said.
Fadil also added that the shooting of a pregnant woman in Intan Jaya is also being handled by the TNI.
“Regarding law enforcement, it’s already done. The pilot case hasn’t been resolved yet; it’s still being processed. The shooting in Intan Jaya, that is, is being handled by our colleagues from the TNI,” he said. US pilot shot dead in Papua. Previously, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Habema Operations Command (Koops TNI) recovered the body of Associated Mission Aviation (AMA) Pilatus pilot Nicholas F. Goselin, who was killed in a shooting and arson attack at Ipdeheik Airport, Balinggama Village, Sobaham District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains, on Friday (July 3, 2026).
Deputy Commander of Koops TNI Habema, Brigadier General Riyanto, stated that the evacuation operation was carried out through the Special Operation Rapid Recapture to secure the airport as an entry point for aid, as well as tactical Search and Rescue (SAR) operations to evacuate the victims. “We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” Riyanto said in a statement on Friday (July 3, 2026). “Our priority is to rescue the victims, secure the location, protect the community, and support law enforcement against the perpetrators,” he added.
He added that the operation involved 10 Koops TNI Habema personnel supported by two Caracal helicopters. The evacuation process took place in difficult-to-reach mountainous terrain.
