JAYAPURA – The Traffic Unit of the Jayapura City Police continues to promote road safety awareness among the community, including young children, through its Police Go To School program.
The activity was held at Kemala Bhayangkari Hamadi Kindergarten in Jayapura City on Thursday (September 24, 2026), featuring interactive and engaging lessons designed to introduce children to basic road safety practices.
The activity was not limited to the school environment. The students were also invited to take part in an educational patrol along Jalan Amfibi toward the Entrop area. During the activity, the children were introduced directly to various traffic signs they encountered along the route.
Traffic Unit personnel provided simple explanations about the colors, shapes, and functions of different traffic signs to make the information easier for the students to understand.
Head of the Traffic Unit of the Jayapura City Police, AKP Muh. Akbar, said that traffic safety education needs to be introduced from an early age so that children can begin to understand the importance of following traffic rules and remaining cautious when using the road.
“Through this activity, we introduce children to various traffic signs, including their colors, shapes, and functions. We want them to understand that traffic signs are designed to help protect the safety of all road users,” said AKP Muh. Akbar.
In addition to learning about traffic signs, the Traffic Unit personnel also taught the students how to cross the road safely. The children were encouraged to use designated crossing facilities such as zebra crossings and to make sure traffic conditions were safe before crossing.
“We also teach the children how to cross the road safely, including paying attention to approaching vehicles and making sure the situation is completely safe before crossing,” he added.
According to AKP Muh. Akbar, traffic safety education for children is not only intended to provide knowledge but also to develop positive habits that they can apply in their daily lives.
He expressed hope that the knowledge gained by the students could also be shared with their parents and family members, allowing road safety awareness to extend beyond the school environment.
“Children are the next generation who need to understand road safety from an early age. We hope what they learn at school can be applied in their daily lives and serve as a reminder for their families,” he said.
He added that road safety is a shared responsibility. The police, schools, and families all have an important role in helping children develop safe and disciplined habits when using the road.
“Education will be more effective when children see positive examples from the people around them. Therefore, we encourage parents and educators to work together in setting an example by always following traffic rules and prioritizing safety on the road,” he emphasized.
Through the Police Go To School program, the Jayapura City Police Traffic Unit remains committed to providing age-appropriate and easy-to-understand traffic safety education for children.
Simple practices such as recognizing traffic signs, using zebra crossings, checking for approaching vehicles before crossing, and reminding family members to remain cautious on the road are expected to become positive habits that children develop from an early age.
