Electricity Becomes the Support of Tourism and Papua’s Creative Economy

JAYAPURA – The Reliability of electricity supply is one of the important factors in supporting the growth of the tourism sector and cultural activities in Papua. To ensure that various tourism agendas run smoothly, PT PLN (Persero) Papua and West Papua Region Parent Unit (UIWP2B) continues to strengthen the readiness of the electricity system in a number of activity locations.

General Manager of PLN UIW Papua and West Papua, Roberth Rumsaur, said that support for the tourism sector is part of PLN’s commitment in providing electricity services that are able to support community activities while providing comfort for tourists.

“Electricity is an important part in supporting various tourism and cultural activities in Papua. Therefore, we continue to be committed to ensuring that the electricity supply remains reliable so that community activities and tourist visits can run well,” said Roberth.

According to him, PLN support is not only carried out when a tourism activity takes place, but also through the readiness of the system and the security of electricity supply in locations that are the center of community activities.

One of these steps was implemented during the implementation of the Sentani Lake Festival (FDS) 2026 in Jayapura Regency which took place on September 3-5, 2026. In the activity, PLN alerted 30 joint personnel supported by 17 operational vehicles as well as various equipment to support electrical reliability to anticipate the possibility of disruptions during the festival.

Roberth explained, the readiness of personnel and equipment is part of PLN’s efforts to ensure that electricity needs at the activity location can be met optimally. With stable electricity support, various activities such as cultural performances, local product exhibitions, MSME activities, to visitor activities can run without being constrained by electricity supply problems.

“Our electrical security is carried out thoroughly by alerting personnel and equipment at the activity location. This is to ensure that if there is a disturbance, it can be handled immediately so that the activities of the community and tourists are not disturbed,” he said.

Furthermore, PLN sees the strengthening of the tourism sector having a close relationship with the economic activities of the community. Various festivals and cultural activities are not only a space to introduce the tourism potential of Papua, but also open up opportunities for UMKM actors, creative economic actors, and local communities to obtain economic benefits.

Therefore, PLN’s support for tourism is directed not limited to keeping the electricity on during the activity. Energy relidity is also part of the effort to create an ecosystem that supports the development of community business activities around tourist destinations.

PLN is committed to continue to synergize with local governments, event organizers, and various stakeholders in supporting the tourism and culture agenda in Papua. Through reliable electricity supply and readiness of services in the field, PLN hopes that there will be more activities that can encourage tourism as well as provide a positive impact on the economy of the Papuan people.
