Jayawijaya – The Damai Cartenz-2026 Operation Police Task Force, together with the Jayawijaya Resort Police (Polres), is conducting an investigation and sweep following a shooting incident targeting three employees of the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Agency in Muliama District, Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) afternoon. The three victims—part of a group of eleven people—died after sustaining gunshot wounds while returning from an inspection of a rice field development project.
The incident occurred at approximately 15:53 ​​WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time) in Muliama Village, Muliama District. The group of Agriculture Agency employees had traveled from Wamena to Muliama District to inspect the implementation of the rice field development activities.
On the return journey to Wamena, the group was allegedly intercepted by an armed group. According to information gathered by officers, the perpetrators separated the group members. Eight individuals—all indigenous Papuans, including a small child—were reportedly separated from the three employees, who were non-indigenous residents (migrants). Subsequently, the three employees were allegedly targeted and shot.
The identities of the victims are as follows:
- WB (24), female, an employee of the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Agency. She sustained a gunshot wound to her right waist. She was declared dead at Wamena Regional General Hospital (RSUD) after receiving medical treatment.
- AR (49), female, Head of the Livestock Division at the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Agency. She sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was declared dead at the scene.
- AAM (35), male, an employee of the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Agency. He sustained gunshot wounds to the back of the head and his left hand; he was declared dead at the scene.
The three victims were subsequently evacuated for medical attention at Wamena Regional General Hospital (RSUD). Upon receiving information about the incident, joint personnel from the Operation Damai Cartenz-2026 Police Task Force and the Jayawijaya Resort Police immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct an investigation.
In addition to securing the immediate vicinity of the incident, personnel from the Operation Damai Cartenz-2026 Police Task Force swept the area around the Muliama Community Health Center (Puskesmas) and the location where the shooting is believed to have occurred.
Officers also secured eight witnesses who were accompanying the victim’s group at the time of the incident. These witnesses were subsequently questioned to assist investigators in establishing the sequence of events and identifying the parties suspected of involvement in the shooting.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting was carried out by an armed criminal group (KKB) from the Nduga region. However, security forces are continuing their investigation and gathering information to confirm the identities and involvement of the perpetrators.
The Head of Operation Damai Cartenz-2026, Inspector General Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, stated that his team has taken security measures in response to the incident by conducting a thorough investigation and condemning the act of violence against civilians.
“The Operation Damai Cartenz-2026 Police Task Force, together with the Jayawijaya Resort Police, immediately took action upon receiving information about the incident. We are ensuring a comprehensive investigation to uncover the sequence of events, identify the perpetrators, and hold them accountable for their actions in accordance with applicable laws,” said the Head of Operation Damai Cartenz-2026.
He emphasized that acts of violence against civilians are unjustifiable. Therefore, security forces will continue to conduct in-depth investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of Operation Damai Cartenz-2026, Senior Commissioner… Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., urged the public in Jayawijaya Regency to remain calm and not be easily provoked by unverified information.
“We urge the entire community to remain calm and entrust the handling of this case to security personnel. The Operation Damai Cartenz Police Task Force, together with the Jayawijaya Resort Police, will thoroughly investigate this shooting incident and make every effort to identify and apprehend the perpetrators in accordance with the law,” said the Deputy Head of Operations for Damai Cartenz-2026.
The Deputy Head of Operations for Damai Cartenz-2026 also called on the public not to be provoked by invalid information that could cause unrest within the community.
Currently, the Operation Damai Cartenz-2026 Police Task Force and the Jayawijaya Resort Police are continuing their investigation, conducting sweeps of the area, and gathering statements from witnesses. These measures are being taken to fully uncover the details of the shooting incident.
