Nabire – Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has urged the Central Papua Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) to prioritize a humane approach when maintaining security and administering governance in the region.
Pigai conveyed this during a meeting with the Central Papua Forkopimda in Nabire on Sunday evening, following input from local government officials, the TNI (military), the National Police (Polri), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the prosecutor’s office, and other relevant stakeholders regarding the situation in Central Papua.
According to Pigai, there is a shared vision among these various elements to improve the community’s condition, even though there remain several obstacles that need to be addressed.
“I conclude that, fundamentally, you all desire positive outcomes, yet there are obstacles. Well, dealing with those obstacles is our responsibility,” he said.
Pigai stated that the input provided by the public and government officials would be noted for follow-up action by the government.
He called on local government and security forces to protect the community and ensure that implemented policies are oriented toward resolving issues and improving public welfare.
Pigai noted that Central Papua is a focus of the central government; consequently, the performance of government and security agencies in the region is also under scrutiny.
He stated that local government, the police, the TNI, BIN, the prosecutor’s office, and other stakeholders play a role in ensuring that government policies deliver a tangible impact on the community.
Pigai reminded the attendees that addressing issues in Central Papua should not focus solely on security aspects but must also prioritize the protection and welfare of the people.
“Protect the people; love the people. These are our people, Sir. Our lives are brief, after all. What matters now is that we represent the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Uplift the people and ensure their welfare. That is what we can do—let us do our best,” he said.
The dialogue took place amidst ongoing efforts by local government and security forces to maintain security in Central Papua following a series of security-related developments in the region.
Central and local governments continue to coordinate on matters regarding the handling of displaced persons, the restoration of public services, and the protection of the community in Central Papua.
