Nabire Indigenous Community Rejects Hoaxes and Provocation, Keeps Papua Stable

Wamena – The indigenous community in Nabire Regency, Central Papua, has reaffirmed its commitment to rejecting all forms of hoaxes and provocations that could potentially trigger anarchic demonstrations or disrupt public security and order.

Yona Kogoya, Regional Coordinator of the Central Papua Indigenous Community Institution (LMA), stated that the diversity of tribes, cultures, and religions in Nabire is a strength that must be preserved to foster brotherhood and ensure a peaceful life.

“The diversity of tribes, cultures, and religions is the primary strength of the Nabire community in maintaining brotherhood and peace,” said Yona Kogoya.

According to Yona, the public needs to exercise wisdom when responding to circulating information, particularly narratives whose veracity has not been verified. Such information could be exploited by certain parties to inflame public emotions and incite conflict.

He emphasized that voicing aspirations is part of democratic life and can be done in an orderly and peaceful manner. However, calls for violence, vandalism, or actions that undermine unity must be rejected.

“The indigenous community plays a crucial role in ensuring that the expression of aspirations is not infiltrated by agendas leading to violence and conflict,” he said.

Meanwhile, representing the Regent of Nabire, La Halim—Assistant I to the Nabire Regional Secretary—commended the LMA’s role in maintaining social order and strengthening community unity.

He expressed hope that differences of opinion arising within the community would be handled maturely, preventing them from becoming opportunities for parties seeking to provoke or escalate tensions.

“Differences should serve as a bond of brotherhood, not a source of division,” said La Halim.

This commitment by the Nabire indigenous community is expected to strengthen the culture of peace and heighten public vigilance regarding information that could potentially trigger conflict. By prioritizing unity, security, and the orderly expression of aspirations, the community is expected to help maintain a stable environment in Central Papua, ensuring that development and social life proceed safely and harmoniously.
