Jayapura Government Calls for Public Support for New Community School

Jayapura, Indonesia — The Jayapura City Government in Papua is calling on local residents to support the development of a Sekolah Rakyat, or Community School, aimed at expanding access to education for children, particularly those from economically disadvantaged families.

Jayapura Deputy Mayor Rustan Saru said in Jayapura on Friday that community support is essential to ensure the construction process proceeds smoothly through to completion.

He said the Community School is expected to provide children in Jayapura with better opportunities to access education, especially those whose families face economic hardship.

“The Community School is expected to become an educational space for children from underprivileged families who experience economic limitations,” he said.

Rustan said the school is being developed as an investment in the future of children in Jayapura. For that reason, he emphasized the need for public consultations related to environmental impact assessments before construction begins.

He stressed that the project should not focus solely on constructing a school building, but must also take into account environmental sustainability and the social conditions of communities living around the site.

“Development must not only be oriented toward establishing a school building, but must also consider environmental sustainability and the social conditions of the community,” he said.

Rustan explained that the Community School in Jayapura is being designed as a residential, boarding-style educational facility. As a result, security, comfort, environmental management and the social well-being of students must be given priority during the planning and construction process.

He added that the development of the Community School represents an important investment in the future of children in Jayapura.

Therefore, he called for the project to be carefully planned while considering its potential impact on the environment and the daily lives of surrounding communities.

“We hope that the presence of the Community School will also provide benefits to the surrounding community,” he said.

The Jayapura City Government expects continued public support throughout the development process so that the Community School can eventually serve not only as an educational facility, but also as a source of broader benefits for nearby communities and the surrounding environment.
