WAMENA– Efforts to restore areas affected by inter-tribal conflict in Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua, are being pushed forward to ensure recovery measures can be implemented promptly. The Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Special Autonomy Development in Papua (KEPPOKP) has urged the central and regional governments to accelerate rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts for affected communities.
KEPPOKP Chairman Velix V. Wanggai, together with Jayawijaya Regent Atenius Murib and Lanny Jaya Deputy Regent Fredi G. Tabuni, previously held coordination meetings with the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polkam) and several relevant ministries and government agencies regarding post-conflict recovery.
Velix said accelerated recovery was necessary so residents who lost their homes as a result of the conflict could return to normal life as soon as possible.
“We, together with the regional governments of Jayawijaya and Lanny Jaya, hope that serious measures can be taken immediately so that people who are still living in temporary shelters can have homes again and resume their normal activities,” he said.
The meeting discussed various measures to accelerate the rehabilitation and reconstruction process following the conflict that occurred in Wamena in May 2026.
Several issues were discussed, including implementation mechanisms, legal aspects of social conflict management, and support from relevant ministries in restoring affected areas.
Meanwhile, Jayawijaya Regent Atenius Murib expressed hope that the results of the coordination meeting would be jointly monitored so that the agreed measures could be implemented promptly.
He said accelerating the recovery process was important not only to restore the conditions of affected communities but also to maintain stability and prevent further conflict.
The Jayawijaya Regency Government has also expressed its readiness to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction process and ensure security throughout its implementation.
The regional government also hopes that communities across Highland Papua, particularly in Jayawijaya, Lanny Jaya and Yahukimo, will continue to strengthen their support so that the entire post-conflict recovery process can proceed safely, orderly and peacefully.
