Hesegem Clarifies Photo and Narrative Claiming Papua Freedom Organization Is the Biggest Human Rights Violator in Indonesia

Wamena – Human rights activist and Executive Director of the Papua Justice and Human Integrity Foundation (YKKMP), Theo Hesegem, on Saturday (July 18th) sent a letter of clarification regarding a photo of him in a poster with provocative text circulating on social media and WhatsApp in Papua.

According to Hesegem, the poster circulating online featured his photo with the caption, “The Papua Freedom Organization in Papua Is the Biggest Human Rights Violator in Indonesia.”

Hesegem confirmed that the photo was indeed his. However, the use of the photo was without permission, knowledge, and approval from him or the foundation he leads.

“The narrative or statement included in the poster is not my statement or an official statement from YKKMP and has never been conveyed by me in any form,” said Hesegem in Wamena, Jayawijaya, Papua Highlands, Saturday (July 18th).

Therefore, Hesegem stated, the poster constitutes a form of identity theft and photo misuse that has the potential to mislead the public and lead to misunderstandings regarding the YKKMP’s stance and position.

“YKKMP’s stance and principles remain consistent, condemning all forms of legal violations, human rights violations, and acts of violence committed by anyone, regardless of the perpetrator. YKKMP always works based on the principles of humanity, justice, truth, and respect for human rights,” he said.

Hesegem also emphasized that YKKMP remains committed to the principle that Papua needs peace, not violence. He believes that resolving various issues in Papua must be achieved through dignified dialogue, respect for human rights, and peaceful efforts involving all parties.

“We ask the party that created and distributed the poster to immediately stop distributing it, delete all posts, and stop using my photo or name without permission,” Hesegem further stated.

Hesegem also urged the public not to easily believe or spread information that has not been verified and to verify all circulating information.

“If this misuse of photos and misrepresentation of statements continues, we will consider taking steps in accordance with applicable legal provisions to protect the good name and integrity of the institution,” said Hesegem.

Hesegem believes that the creation and distribution of posters that misrepresent photos and contain false statements are irresponsible.

He believes these actions have the potential to divide society, provoke public opinion, and disrupt peace efforts in Papua.

“We urge the entire community not to be provoked and to work together to maintain a safe, peaceful, and conducive situation in Papua,” Hesegem said.
