PANIAI – The Central Papua Health Office continues to improve the quality of healthcare services in mountainous regions by strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers in Paniai Regency. This effort is being carried out through an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program focused on enhancing the skills and competencies of health personnel in the prevention and control of priority infectious diseases.
The training, held on June 3–4, 2026, involved dozens of healthcare workers from community health centers (Puskesmas) across various districts in Paniai Regency. The program covered HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), malaria, leprosy, filariasis, and hepatitis as part of broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system at the primary care level.
Isak Waine, Head of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Section of the Central Papua Health Office, stated that improving the capacity of healthcare personnel is a crucial step in addressing healthcare challenges in regions with complex geographical conditions.
According to him, healthcare workers equipped with strong knowledge and skills will be better prepared to provide effective services, ranging from disease prevention and early case detection to treatment in accordance with established national standards.
“Strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers is a vital investment in ensuring equitable and high-quality healthcare services for communities, including those living in remote districts and villages,” he said.
In addition to technical presentations, participants received training on disease surveillance, program recording and reporting systems, healthcare service performance analysis, and strategies for addressing various challenges commonly encountered in the field.
The program also supports efforts to accelerate the elimination of filariasis, strengthen leprosy control measures, and enhance hepatitis prevention and control initiatives throughout Central Papua.
Meanwhile, Beni Degei, Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of the Paniai Regency Health Office, expressed his appreciation for the guidance and assistance provided by the Central Papua Health Office. He noted that the training had significantly contributed to improving the knowledge and capabilities of healthcare personnel, enabling them to deliver better services to the community.
Through close collaboration among the provincial government, regency government, healthcare workers, and local communities, it is expected that infectious disease control efforts in Paniai Regency will become increasingly effective and contribute to the realization of a healthy, self-reliant, and prosperous Central Papua.
