Jayapura, Indonesia – As Indonesia commemorates Pancasila Day on June 1, Papuan youth leader Simon Kossay has called on the people of Papua to strengthen national unity, uphold the spirit of togetherness, and actively support regional development guided by the values of Pancasila, Indonesia’s state ideology.
This year’s Pancasila Day celebration carries the theme, “Pancasila, the Unifier of the Nation and the Foundation of World Peace,” highlighting the importance of unity, harmony, and social justice in a diverse society.
According to Kossay, Pancasila remains the cornerstone of Indonesia’s national identity, serving as a unifying force among the country’s diverse ethnic, religious, cultural, and traditional communities. He emphasized that Papua, known for its rich cultural heritage and strong local wisdom, has an important role in preserving these values.
“Pancasila provides the foundation for maintaining peace, harmony, and mutual respect among all Indonesians. These principles must continue to be reflected in our daily lives to ensure a safe and prosperous future for Papua,” Kossay said.
He also encouraged Papuan youth to use the occasion of Pancasila Day to deepen their sense of patriotism, strengthen tolerance, and contribute positively to development initiatives aimed at improving public welfare across the region.
Kossay noted that ongoing development efforts in Papua can deliver greater benefits when supported by a stable security environment and a shared commitment to unity among all elements of society.
“Pancasila teaches us the values of unity, mutual cooperation, and social justice. Therefore, let us work together to preserve peace, strengthen brotherhood, and support development for a more advanced and prosperous Papua,” he stated.
Kossay further expressed hope that the commemoration of Pancasila Day would serve not only as a ceremonial event but also as an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of communities throughout Papua to practice Pancasila’s values and contribute to national cohesion amid evolving social challenges.
Indonesia observes Pancasila Day annually on June 1 to commemorate the introduction of Pancasila, the nation’s foundational philosophy, which continues to guide the country’s democratic development and multicultural society.
