Save the Papuan People from Extinction, Human Rights Activist Calls for an End to Tribal Wars

Timika – Papuan human rights activist Selpius Bobii called for an end to the ongoing tribal wars in several areas of Papua, particularly in the Lapago and Meepago regions.

In a written appeal delivered Friday (May 15, 2026), Selpius considered tribal wars an old habit that contradicts human rights values, the teachings of the Bible, and Papuan culture, which upholds human life.

“Tribal wars are an old habit that stands in stark contrast to the noble values of human rights and the Bible,” he said.

He stated that the right to life is a fundamental human right that cannot be revoked by anyone for any reason. He believes that humans are God’s creations whose dignity and life must be respected.

Selpius also called on the Papuan people to end horizontal conflicts, which he believes only harm the Papuan people themselves.

“Other parties are laughing at us. Because tribal wars benefit Indonesia’s colonial enemies,” he explained.

He emphasized the importance of rebuilding brotherhood among Papuans of the Melanesian race, which has been shattered by tribal conflict and war.

He believes that unity is key to maintaining the continuity of the Papuan ethnic group amidst the various social, political, and economic challenges currently facing the Papuan people.
“Extinguish the flames of hatred in our hearts, and let us rekindle brotherhood and unity to save the remaining Papuan ethnic group from extinction,” he concluded.

Selpius concluded his appeal with an appeal to maintain peace and unity throughout Papua.
