Ministry of Health Urges Serious Handling of ATM Cases in Papua Highlands

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing cases of Acute Transverse Myelitis (ATM) reported in the Papua Highlands.

The government emphasized that the condition must be handled promptly, accurately, and comprehensively to reduce the risk of severe complications among affected patients.

ATM is a neurological disorder that can cause sudden weakness or even paralysis, requiring immediate medical attention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. In response, the Ministry is pushing to strengthen healthcare services in the affected areas, including improving the capacity of medical personnel and ensuring the availability of adequate medical facilities and supplies.

In addition to patient care, public awareness efforts are being intensified to help communities recognize early symptoms and seek medical assistance as soon as possible. At the same time, field investigations are ongoing to identify the underlying causes of the reported cases in the region.

In an official statement, a Ministry representative stressed that the government is taking the situation seriously.

“The handling of ATM cases in the Papua Highlands is a top priority for us. We are committed to ensuring that all patients receive the best possible care, while continuing to strengthen coordination with local authorities to ensure an effective response,” the representative stated.

Furthermore, the Ministry called on all stakeholders—including healthcare workers, local governments, and the public—to remain vigilant and actively support efforts to manage the situation. Through strong collaboration, it is expected that the cases can be controlled and public health in the region can be safeguarded.
