Wamena – Officers from the Jayawijaya Resort Police (Polres Jayawijaya) are currently investigating the discovery of hundreds of marijuana plants in Hubikiak District, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Mountains Province.
The discovery began after local residents reported suspicious plants believed to be marijuana growing in a garden area in the district. Acting on the information, personnel from the Narcotics Investigation Unit of Polres Jayawijaya immediately went to the location to conduct an inspection and further investigation.
During the field inspection, officers found 167 marijuana plants growing in the garden area, with varying sizes ranging from small seedlings to more mature plants. The plants were subsequently secured as evidence for further investigation.
Jayawijaya Police Chief, AKBP Anak Agung Made Satriya Bimantara, stated that the police are still conducting a deeper investigation to identify the individuals responsible for planting and cultivating the marijuana plants.
“We are still investigating this discovery, including tracing the landowner and those responsible for planting or managing the plants. All evidence has been secured and our officers are continuing the investigation at the scene,” he said.
He added that the police will intensify monitoring and patrols in vulnerable areas to prevent the abuse and distribution of narcotics in Papua Mountains Province, particularly in Jayawijaya Regency.
“We urge the public to actively provide information to the police if they are aware of any activities related to drug abuse or trafficking. Community cooperation is very important to maintain security and protect the younger generation from the dangers of narcotics,” he added.
Currently, Polres Jayawijaya is continuing to develop the case to determine whether the location was deliberately used as a marijuana plantation and to identify the parties involved in the illegal activity.
