Jayapura – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region V through the Dock II Maritime Meteorology Station of Jayapura issued an early warning regarding the potential for high waves in a number of northern waters in Papua. The warning was issued following the sea weather conditions which in the last few days were observed to have improved significantly.
Head of the Jayapura Maritime Meteorology Station, Heri Purnomo, S.Si., explained that the potential for high waves was triggered by strong winds with a maximum speed of 4 to 30 knots. This condition has the potential to cause an increase in the height of sea waves that can endanger shipping activities and coastal communities.
“Water areas that have the potential to be affected include Mamberamo-Sarmi waters, Biak waters, Serui-Waropen waters, and Mapia Islands waters. This condition is expected to last in the next three days,” said Heri Purnomo in her written statement to Cenderawasih Pos, Wednesday (1/14/2026).
He added, the increase in extreme weather conditions was influenced by the emergence of tropical cyclone seeds in the Pacific Ocean which has been observed since January 12, 2026. This phenomenon indirectly affects the weather dynamics in the northern waters of Papua.
“The impact caused includes an increase in wind speed, sea wave height, and the potential for light to moderate rain in the waters and coastal areas,” he explained.
BMKG urges the public, especially fishermen, sea transportation operators, and cruise service users to increase their vigilance and always pay attention to the latest weather information before doing activities at sea. Coastal communities are also asked to anticipate the possible impact of high waves to avoid the risk of sea accidents.
