Strong Wind Hits Mimika, Three Indekos on Kartini Street Hit by Fallen Trees

Mimika — Rain accompanied by strong winds that hit Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, caused three boarding houses on Kartini Street to be hit by fallen trees. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, January 13, 2026, and was reported to have occurred around Wednesday morning (1/14/2026) at 00.47 WIT.

Acting (Plt) Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Mimika, Agustina Rahaded, explained that the fallen tree was triggered by a sudden strong wind. As a result, the tree fell on the residential building owned by the residents and caused damage to the roof and building structure.

“The tree fell and hit the boarding house. The community immediately contacted the firefighters, then around 10 personnel were immediately deployed to the scene,” said Agustina when contacted.

Upon arrival at the location, the officers carried out initial handling by evacuating tree trunks and branches that hit the building, as well as ensuring a safe situation for the residents of the boarding house. No casualties were reported in the incident, but a number of material damage were experienced by the residents.

Agustina added that the fire department will provide assistance to the victims in the form of zinc, wooden logs, iron, and nails to help with temporary repairs to the affected buildings.

BPBD Mimika urges the public to remain alert to the potential for extreme weather, especially rain accompanied by strong winds, which can trigger similar incidents. The public is also asked to immediately report to the relevant parties if an emergency situation occurs in order to get a quick treatment.
