Jayawijaya — The most senior traditional leader of Jayawijaya, Naligi Kurisi, has called on the public to maintain order and not be influenced by calls for actions that could potentially trigger security disturbances during the commemoration of International Human Rights Day.
Naligi emphasized his commitment to supporting efforts to maintain regional stability in coordination with security forces, particularly in December, which is regarded as a sacred month for Christians in Jayawijaya.
“I urge the people of Jayawijaya to focus on their respective responsibilities. Do not be easily influenced by calls to carry out activities that could create anxiety,” he said.
He also asked residents not to take part in calls for action, which he considers vulnerable to exploitation by certain parties to provoke unrest.
“Let us welcome Christmas 2025 in peace. Do not take part in any actions that could make the situation unsafe. Wamena is our shared responsibility,” Naligi stressed.
A similar message was conveyed by a Byak youth leader in Manokwari, Rommy Arwam.
Arwam reminded the public that this momentum should serve as a moral reflection for the people of West Papua to continue upholding the values of humanity, justice, and unity.
He emphasized that human rights issues are not only about preventing violations, but also about fulfilling the basic rights of citizens, including the right to live in peace and to have fair opportunities in development.
“The commemoration of Human Rights Day in Manokwari should be understood as a shared commitment to strengthening unity and social harmony,” he said.
Arwam also expressed appreciation for the role of the Regional Government as well as the TNI and Polri in maintaining stability, allowing community activities in Papua to continue as normal.
He reminded the public to remain vigilant against provocation, hoaxes, and calls that could potentially divide society. According to him, there are always parties who take advantage of certain moments to undermine regional security stability. Therefore, he urged all citizens to be more critical in filtering information.
He added that synergy among various elements of society is key to ensuring that the Human Rights Day commemoration takes place safely and in a spirit of brotherhood, as only through such collaboration can social stability be maintained amid Papua’s dynamics.
“Maintaining security is part of respecting the people’s right to live in peace and prosperity,” he concluded.
