Intan Jaya – The Regent of Intan Jaya, Aner Maisini, has strongly condemned the recent act of violence that claimed the life of a road construction worker in Ndugusiga Village, Wandai District, on Tuesday (October 7, 2025). The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the West Papua National Liberation Army – Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM).
The victim was part of a government infrastructure project aimed at improving inter-district connectivity and boosting the welfare of local communities in Intan Jaya.
“I deeply regret this incident. The victim was a civilian, someone who was working for the development of our region. Our area has started to recover, so why must such acts continue?” Regent Maisini told reporters via phone on Thursday (October 9, 2025).
Maisini firmly stated that no form of struggle should ever justify the killing of innocent civilians. He urged TPNPB-OPM members to cease all violent actions that only bring suffering to their own people.
“I call on our brothers in TPNPB-OPM to stop committing violence against civilians. Do not harm ordinary people. If you have aspirations, express them through proper and peaceful means—not by shooting those who are working to make a living,” he emphasized.
The Regent also expressed his deep condolences to the victim’s family. The body has been transported to the victim’s hometown in Toraja, South Sulawesi, for burial.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Intan Jaya, we convey our heartfelt condolences. May the family be given strength and comfort,” he said.
Maisini further called on residents to remain calm and continue supporting the government’s development programs, urging unity in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
“I appeal to all Intan Jaya residents to stay vigilant, maintain security, and not be provoked by acts of terror. Let’s continue supporting development efforts so that our region can become peaceful, progressive, and prosperous,” he concluded. (VN)
