Muggings on the Rise in Jayapura Regency, Police Chief Orders Officers to Shoot Perpetrators in the Leg

SENTANI – Police have affirmed they will take firm action, including shooting, against perpetrators of muggings that have increasingly plagued Jayapura Regency, Papua.

This follows a violent robbery that occurred in the jurisdiction of Sentani Timur Police Sector, which claimed a victim’s life.

Jayapura Police Chief, AKBP Umar Nasatekay, stressed that there is no room for criminals who disturb public order.

“If it is clear that the suspect is a mugger, we will take firm action—even shooting at least in the leg. This is a clear directive for officers on the ground,” he told reporters in Sentani on Monday night (September 29, 2025).

In the pursuit effort, Jayapura Police’s Opsnal Team has joined forces with personnel from Sentani Timur Police Sector and other units. Additional deployments are being made to narrow the perpetrators’ movements.

“We continue to receive information from the public, both through social media and WhatsApp groups, regarding suspicious activities linked to mugging. This information greatly supports our work,” he explained.

Furthermore, the Police Chief confirmed that patrol activities are being intensified, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Patrol routes cover areas from the city boundary up to downtown Sentani.

“We hope the presence of police in the field can provide a sense of security while preventing perpetrators from acting. This effort also depends on the growing participation of the community in safeguarding their surroundings,” Umar added.

Jayapura Police also urged the public to remain vigilant, reduce unnecessary late-night activities, and promptly report any potential criminal acts.

With synergy between law enforcement and the community, it is expected that public security and order in Jayapura Regency will remain safe and conducive.
