WAMENA – The Papua Highlands Provincial Government has urged the central government, through the Ministry of Home Affairs, to allocate a portion of the revenue sharing (DBH) tax from PT Freeport Indonesia to the Papua Highlands Province.
The Governor of Papua Highlands, Dr. (HC) Jhon Tabo, SE., M.B.A., stated that this new autonomous region (DOB) has very limited fiscal capacity and relies solely on central government transfers. This situation poses a major challenge in supporting government operations.
“We admit that the cost of living is quite high. The regional inflation rate remains the highest in Indonesia. However, under these circumstances, the government will strive to adjust its governance and stimulate the people’s economy as much as possible,” he said in Wamena, Wednesday (August 13).
According to him, the local economy of the Papua Highlands still heavily depends on government funding. Nevertheless, in the past two weeks, Wamena has started to show signs of economic activity, following the disbursement of the Infrastructure Additional Fund (DTI) under a grant scheme from the central government.
