Jayapura – Personnel from Sinak Police Station are currently monitoring a gunfire disturbance believed to have originated from Yauria Village, reportedly caused by an armed group based in Sinak.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2024, prompting police personnel to remain on high alert.
Papua Regional Police Public Relations Chief, Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, confirmed the event, stating, “At 17:45 local time, gunfire was reported from Yauria Village, and it was immediately monitored by Sinak Police personnel.”
Separately, Puncak Police Chief, Commissioner I Nyoman Punia, explained that the incident was linked to a “Bakar Batu” event, a traditional gathering, organized by the campaign team of candidate Elpis Tabuni at 13:45 in Gigobak Village.
“There was a miscommunication between the event organizers and the armed group based in Sinak, which was also observing the event. This led to a confrontation, where stones were thrown, resulting in casualties on both sides,” he said.
The miscommunication reportedly arose when the group, led by Kalenak Murib, demanded money from the organizers, which was not fulfilled, sparking the violent altercation.
“At present, Sinak Police personnel are taking precautionary measures to prevent further casualties or unwanted outcomes,” Puncak Police Chief Nyoman concluded.
