BIAK — The Youth Pledge Day (Sumpah Pemuda) serves as a reminder for the younger generation in Papua to strengthen unity and cohesion, preserve indigenous customs, and play an active role in regional development. Indigenous and community leaders have called upon Papuan youth to maintain harmony, bolster the spirit of nationalism, and contribute to the region’s progress within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

David Rumansara, Chairman of the Biak Numfor Indigenous Community Institution (LMA), stated that the Youth Pledge should not be viewed merely as an annual commemoration. According to him, this occasion should serve as a reminder of the struggles endured by national heroes to secure and defend Indonesia’s independence.

David emphasized that Papuan youth hold a strategic role in safeguarding unity while supporting development through active participation across various sectors. The younger generation is expected to act as catalysts for change by developing their personal potential, upholding cultural values, and fostering harmonious relationships within society.

“Papuan youth must become the driving force for unity, preserve indigenous customs, and take part in development. The spirit of the Youth Pledge must be manifested through concrete actions that bring benefits to the community,” he said.

Nehemia Ronsumbre, an indigenous leader (Mananwir-Er Beba Ronsumbre), also highlighted the importance of the younger generation being prepared to face the challenges of a changing era. He noted that young people must possess the ability to critically evaluate information—especially that circulating on social media—to avoid being easily swayed by unverified content.

Nehemia encouraged Papuan youth to use technology wisely, improve their personal capabilities, and take advantage of educational and skill-development opportunities to support the region’s advancement. He believes that the preservation of indigenous customs and culture can go hand-in-hand with progress in science and technology. Meanwhile, Kirenius Telenggen, a religious and community leader from Puncak Jaya Regency, has called on all segments of society to maintain security and order to ensure the smooth progress of development in Central Papua.

According to Kirenius, a secure and conducive environment requires the involvement of all parties—including religious, traditional, and community leaders, as well as the youth and security forces. He emphasized that any issues should be resolved through communication and peaceful approaches, with a focus on the common good.

“Security is not solely the responsibility of the authorities; it also requires the awareness and support of the entire community. Let us work together to keep our region safe and peaceful for the sake of continued development,” said Kirenius.

He expressed his hope that the spirit of the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) would inspire the young generation in Papua to strengthen bonds of brotherhood, respect diversity, and participate in development efforts. By upholding unity, preserving culture, and prioritizing dialogue, the youth of Papua can play a vital role in fostering a region that is peaceful, progressive, and prosperous.

BIAK — The Youth Pledge Day (Sumpah Pemuda) serves as a reminder for the younger generation in Papua to strengthen unity and cohesion, preserve indigenous customs, and play an active role in regional development.
