Support from provincial and regency administrations is considered essential to developing local universities and colleges so they can produce a skilled and competitive generation of human resources.

Head of the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDIKTI) Region XIV for Papua and West Papua, Suriel Samuel Mofu, said local universities need concrete support from regional governments to strengthen educational standards and improve the quality of academic services.

He made the statement while attending the 17th graduation ceremony of Petra Baliem Wamena Agricultural College (STIPER), held in Jayawijaya Regency on Sunday.

According to Suriel, the growing number of higher education institutions across Papua Highlands represents an important opportunity to expand access to education for local communities. However, this must be accompanied by government support to ensure these institutions can develop and provide better educational services.

“We hope to receive support for the development of higher education institutions in Papua Highlands so they can educate and develop the region’s human resources more effectively,” he said.

He emphasized that strengthening local universities and colleges is also important to ensure that young people in Papua Highlands have greater opportunities to pursue higher education without having to leave their home region.

With better-quality higher education institutions available locally, students can access university education closer to home while reducing the financial burden associated with studying outside the region.

“We hope our young people can pursue their studies at universities and colleges in Papua Highlands, so they do not have to study elsewhere, which would require significantly higher expenses,” he said.

Suriel also highlighted the potential economic benefits of encouraging students to pursue higher education within their own region.

He explained that education-related spending at local institutions could help circulate money within the regional economy and contribute to accelerating local development.

“When our young people study outside the region, the money spent on their education goes to other areas. However, if they study here, that money will circulate within Papua Highlands and contribute to accelerating regional development,” he explained.

According to data from the Higher Education Database (PDDikti) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), eight active higher education institutions are officially registered in Papua Highlands Province.

These institutions are Yapis Wamena Amal Ilmiah University (UNAIM) in Jayawijaya, Baliem Papua University (UNIBA) in Jayawijaya, Okmin Papua University of Science and Technology (UOP) in Pegunungan Bintang, Abdi Wacana Wamena College of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP), Wamena Christian College of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP), Petra Baliem Wamena Agricultural College (STIPER) in Jayawijaya, Netaiken Academy of Foreign Languages in Wamena, Jayawijaya, and Lambu Barat University in Nduga.

In addition, several theology colleges and Christian religious higher education institutions are also operating in the region. These institutions fall under the supervision of the Directorate General of Christian Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

WAMENA– Improving the quality of higher education in Papua Highlands requires stronger cooperation between the central and local governments.
