JAYAPURA, PAPUA – Efforts to provide a sense of security and ensure the recovery of victims of violence against women and children are the concern of the Papua Provincial Government. To support this step, the Papua Provincial Government plans to build a shelter for victims of violence that will be included in the development program in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor of Papua Matthew D. Fakhiri said, the protection of women and children must be a common priority because it is directly related to the values of humanity, dignity, and the future of the Papuan generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, handling violent cases is still facing challenges, one of which is because there are incidents that have not been reported or recorded. This condition requires serious attention so that the victim gets access to protection and handling that suits their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fakhiri asked the related regional device organization (OPD) to evaluate the shelter facilities that have become the assets of the Papua Provincial Government. The evaluation is necessary to ensure that the available facilities can function optimally as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized, the existence of a shelter must be able to provide a temporary safe place for women and children who experience violence. Thus, the victim is expected to have space to obtain protection and undergo a handling process without having to be in a situation that endangers their safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to preparing protective facilities, Fakhiri emphasized the importance of cross-sector cooperation in handling cases of violence. Local governments need to strengthen coordination with the police, prosecutors, customary institutions, and various other stakeholders so that the handling of victims can be carried out thoroughly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, every case must be handled based on the mechanism and provisions of the applicable law. A social approach can also be considered if possible and in accordance with the provisions, without neglecting the protection of the victim and the necessary legal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plan to set up a shelter in 2027 is expected to be part of strengthening the protection system for women and children in Papua. The effort is not only focused on providing a safe place, but also requires inter-institutional coordination so that victims get the right treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
