JAYAPURA, PAPUA – The application of technology and agricultural mechanization is starting to be encouraged to increase rice productivity in Papua as well as strengthen efforts to achieve rice self-sufficiency in the next two to three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Papua Agricultural Implementation and Modernization Center (BRMP) is one of the parties that encourages the implementation of modern agricultural systems through the Modern Advanced Agriculture System (PMAAS) approach. The system is directed to help farmers increase the crop population and land productivity in a more measurable way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Head of BRMP Papua Aser Rouw in Jayapura, Friday, said that agricultural modernization is needed to answer productivity challenges as well as increase farmers’ understanding of the utilization of technology in the cultivation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Farmers in Papua still need to strengthen their understanding of modern agriculture. Therefore, we continue to socialize and educate about PMAAS so that the applied technology can be used optimally,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Aser, one of the advantages of PMAAS implementation is that the fertilization process can be carried out more measuredly according to the needs of the plant. Thus, the use of production facilities can be more effective as well as support the increase in harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The implementation of the system has shown results in rice harvesting activities in East Koya, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Thursday (10\/1\/2026). In that activity, farmers are able to produce around eight tons of grain per hectare from an area of two hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“From the harvest in East Koya, the yield reaches eight tons per hectare. This achievement shows that the application of technology and proper agricultural management can increase land productivity,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The acceie is above the average rice production in Papua which is currently in the range of five tons per hectare. That condition is one of the indicators that the implementation of modern agriculture has the opportunity to increase food production in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aser explained, to achieve the target of rice self-sufficiency in two to three years, the application of technology is not enough to be done only at one location. Education and assistance to farmers need to continue to be expanded so that modern agricultural systems can be implemented sustainably in various rice production centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to increasing productivity, agricultural modernization is also expected to encourage farmers to manage land more efficiently through the use of mechanization and technology in the cultivation stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BRMP Papua will continue to socialize and educate farmers about the implementation of PMAAS, including providing an understanding of cultivation governance in accordance with land conditions and plant needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The effort is expected to strengthen local rice production, reduce dependence on supplies from outside the region, as well as increase the capacity of Papuan farmers in managing technology-based agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
