JAYAPURA, South Papua \u2013 Gambir is considered to have strong potential as a non-timber forest product (NTFP) that can contribute to improving economic activities and creating additional sources of income for communities in South Papua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Head of the Jayapura Region XVII Forest Management Monitoring Agency (BPHL), Plaghelmo Seran, said that the utilization of non-timber forest products could provide economic opportunities for people living in and around forest areas, reducing dependence on timber resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Seran, gambir has significant potential because its cultivation and processing are already being carried out by local communities, particularly small and medium-scale businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The commodity is considered important because its economic benefits can be felt directly by community members involved in its production. Therefore, BPHL Region XVII Jayapura is exploring ways to further strengthen gambir development so that its economic value can be maximized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seran explained that further development would also require proper assistance and guidance to ensure that forest resources are utilized in accordance with applicable regulations while providing greater economic benefits to local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency is also strengthening the role of Forest Management Units (KPH) in managing forest resources directly at the local level. This approach is expected to align sustainable forest management with efforts to improve the livelihoods of communities living within and surrounding forest areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, BPHL Region XVII Jayapura plans to strengthen cooperation with the South Papua Provincial Government in developing and implementing forestry programs that are aligned with local conditions and community needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
