Merauke, South Papua – Efforts to strengthen food security based on local wisdom continue to be encouraged in South Papua. One of them is through the planting movement of around 1,000 sago and sukun seeds which is carried out in the buffer area of Kali Taram, Wasur Village, Merauke Regency. The activity was initiated by a member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia of the PDI Perjuangan Faction of the South Papua Constituency, Edoardus Kaize, as a form of commitment to maintaining the sustainability of local food as well as improving the welfare of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This planting program not only focuses on greening, but also becomes a real step in developing the economic potential of the community based on the natural resources owned by Papua. By involving local residents directly, the activity is expected to be able to grow collective awareness of the importance of preserving Papuan food crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Edoardus Kaize said that sago is a cultural heritage that has strategic value for the lives of the Papuan people. In addition to being a staple food from generation to generation, sago also has economic potential that can continue to be developed if managed sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We deliberately do this joint planting to remind the community to keep preserving sago as a local food from Papua,” said Edoardus, quoted on Friday (6\/26\/2626).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, the preservation of sago is not only related to the fulfillment of food needs, but also becomes part of the efforts to maintain the cultural identity of the Papuan indigenous people. The existence of sago forests is considered to have an important role in maintaining environmental balance as well as being a source of livelihood for people in various regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the planting activity was carried out, Edoardus invited the people of Wasur Village to look for sago and sukun seeds which were then bought and planted together. The approach is carried out so that the community is not only beneficiaries, but also actively involved in every stage of the program so that a sense of ownership grows towards the efforts to preserve local food crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to sago, sukun plants are also chosen because they have a fairly high economic value and have the potential to be an alternative source of food for the community. The two plants are considered capable of supporting food diversification as well as opening up business opportunities that can increase community income in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Edoardus assesses that the development of local food commodities is one of the important strategies to reduce dependence on food supplies from outside the region. By utilizing the potential that Papua has, the community is expected to be able to realize sustainable food independence and strengthen the family’s economic resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He hopes that this sago and sukun planting movement can be an inspiration for the community and local governments to continue to develop the potential of local food as a strategic asset of South Papua.
