Papua – Cenderawasih University Rector Prof. Dr. Oscar Oswald O. Wambrauw, SE, MSc, agr, and PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperation Agreement (PKS) to build an inclusive and sustainable education ecosystem in Papua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Concurrently, the PTFI President Director delivered a public lecture to students and the entire Uncen academic community at the Uncen Science and Partnership Building in Jayapura on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The signing of this collaboration is an important step in strengthening the strategic partnership between Cenderawasih University and PT Freeport Indonesia. This is a continuation of a long and successful collaboration, including the historic handover of the UNCEN Science and Partnership Building in December 2025,” said Prof. Oscar Wambrauw in his remarks at the Tembagapura Auditorium, Uncen Science and Partnership Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Rector stated that collaboration between universities and industry is key to producing superior, adaptive human resources who are ready to face future challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the synergy between UNCEN and PT Freeport Indonesia is not merely an institutional collaboration, but a real commitment to building Papua’s future through education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas stated that collaboration between companies and universities or educational institutions is crucial to aligning supply and demand requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Freeport needs the support of qualified human resources to operate its mining operations. UNCEN will prepare according to their needs without sacrificing the existing curriculum or national standards,” said Tony, who has visited the Uncen campus five times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that Freeport Indonesia and Uncen have a very close history. Numerous collaborations have been undertaken, including research on Singing Dogs in Grasberg, social anthropological research, research on the customary ownership of the Amungme tribe, and collaborations in teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“With great pride and pleasure today, first, we signed an MoU between PTFI and Uncen, which will encompass our various collaborations in educational development, research and innovation, human resource capacity building, and other collaborative programs,” said Tony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Second, an MoU between PTFI, Uncen, and Arizona State University aims to improve the quality of education towards higher accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And third, the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between PTFI and Uncen for the Teaching Practitioner Program, with activities including thematic learning, seminars, training, and character education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public lecture by the President Director of PTFI was enthusiastically received by students from various study programs attending the Tembagapura Auditorium, Science and Partnership Building, Uncen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students received a comprehensive presentation on PTFI’s history and mining operations from upstream to downstream, insights into the industry’s need for superior human resources, career opportunities for Papuan workers, and PTFI’s contribution to the development of Papua and Indonesia through various social investment programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This session also provided a space for active interaction between students and the President Director of PTFI, gaining practical insights into the industrial world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently, 332 Uncen alumni work as professionals at PTFI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are 255 Uncen scholarship recipients from Freeport, with 51 currently active students, and this number is expected to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
