Papua Pegunungan – The Tolikara Regency Government is moving quickly to recover from a massive fire that destroyed hundreds of buildings in Karubaga District, Papua Pegunungan. Tolikara Regent Willem Wandik ensured that all basic needs of the victims were met through logistical assistance, emergency tents, and ease of processing documents that were also destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tolikara Regent Willem Wandik stated that his administration had held a coordination meeting to discuss comprehensive fire management measures. This step follows the fire disaster that struck the Giling Batu area. The incident destroyed hundreds of buildings belonging to residents, including homes, boarding houses, businesses, and home industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This meeting focused on short-, medium-, and long-term management efforts to ensure the safety of residents, the fulfillment of basic needs of victims, and optimal and coordinated post-fire recovery,” he said in a written statement in Wamena, Thursday (January 29, 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wandik expressed his deep empathy and concern for all Karubaga residents affected by the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“On behalf of the Tolikara Regency Government, we express our deepest concern and empathy for all affected residents. We understand the heavy burden experienced by business owners, boarding house owners, home industries, and residents who lost their homes and belongings,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wandik emphasized that the local government’s presence demonstrates its responsibility and commitment to ensuring that residents do not face this disaster alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We, the Tolikara Regency Government, have prepared logistical assistance, set up emergency tents, and provided psychological support to help residents recover from the trauma. The government is here to provide real attention and assistance so that residents can quickly recover and return to their normal lives,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that in addition to emergency assistance, the local government is also ensuring smooth administrative services for residents whose documents were burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Civil Registration Office will facilitate the processing of population documents, and diplomas and educational documents will be handled by the Education Office. Social and health needs will be handled by the Social Services Office, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Health Office, and relevant regional government agencies (OPDs) in accordance with their respective duties and functions,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For initial response, Wandik said, the Tolikara Regency Government has evacuated fire victims to several safe locations in Karubaga, while also distributing logistical assistance and setting up emergency tents as temporary shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local government is also conducting a comprehensive evaluation, including assessing the readiness of firefighting facilities and infrastructure and the availability of water sources in the Karubaga area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This fire incident is a serious concern for the Tolikara Regency Government. Discussions regarding area planning and fire preparedness have previously been held. This incident serves as an important evaluation for all parties to strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation systems to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the police and relevant agencies are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Investigators from the Tolikara Police are investigating the fire that occurred on Wednesday (January 28th) to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed approximately 100 buildings, including homes. The public remains vigilant and should not be provoked as investigators are still conducting their investigation,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, in Jayapura, Thursday (January 29th, 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, based on information obtained, the spread of the fire was due to the strong gusts of fire and limited firefighting facilities, which led to its rapid spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To prevent the fire from spreading further, excavators were deployed to demolish surrounding buildings to prevent further spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There were no casualties in the fire, which caused losses estimated at Rp 22 billion,” said Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
