Jayapura, Papua \u2014 Reverend Melky Wakum, S.Th., Deputy Chairman II of the Kingmi Church Board of Papua Province, has called on the people of Papua to remain calm and not be provoked following the circulation of a viral video showing the burning of a Cenderawasih (Bird-of-Paradise) crown by the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) on Thursday (October 23, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his statement, Rev. Wakum emphasized that the incident involved a deeply sacred symbol of Papuan culture, which has stirred emotional responses among the local community. However, he urged everyone to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could disrupt public order and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet us try to calm the situation and not be controlled by emotion. We can express our aspirations in a good, fair, and constructive manner so that Papua remains peaceful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rev. Wakum further noted that the BBKSDA\u2019s actions appeared to lack any element of intent, adding that the agency had already issued a clarification. He called for dialogue between traditional leaders and government representatives to resolve the issue peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI believe there was no deliberate intention behind the BBKSDA\u2019s actions. They have provided an explanation. Let us, as members of the customary community, sit together and address this matter with peace,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
