Papua \u2013 Papuan figure and activist Charles Kossay has firmly stated his stance regarding the widespread demonstrations taking place across various regions. He reminded the public that freedom of expression is indeed guaranteed under Law No. 9 of 1998 on the Freedom to Express Opinions in Public, but that does not justify carrying out such actions in an anarchic manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPublic demonstrations are a right protected by law. But when those demonstrations turn violent and result in the destruction of public property, they cannot be praised or justified by anyone,\u201d Charles stressed on Tuesday (September 2, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out that the recent mass actions in Jakarta have largely proceeded peacefully and with dignity. He cautioned certain groups not to turn demonstrations into acts of destruction and provocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDon\u2019t teach us Papuans to carry out violent demonstrations. If you conduct anarchic protests, it means you\u2019re teaching us to go even further than that. That\u2019s very dangerous,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized that demonstrations should serve as a means of conveying aspirations in a respectful, clear, and substantive manner\u2014not through acts of vandalism or the burning of public facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
