Jakarta \u2013<\/strong> Representing Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto, M.D.S., M.S.P attended the 2024 National Seminar on the History of the Indonesian Navy, themed “Indonesia’s Historical Perspective on Resolving the Natuna Sea and Papua Conflicts,” on Monday (8\/7) at Balai Samudera Building, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the keynote speaker at the seminar, attended by Chief of the General Staff of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Deputy Chief of Navy Staff, Head of the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla), Deputy Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Secretary General of the National Defense Council (Wantannas), Expert Staff of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), and other speakers, the Acting Secretary General provided a brief history of the Natuna Sea’s ownership. He emphasized that the Natuna waters serve as a connecting region between the Indonesian archipelago and Southeast and East Asia. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Indonesia has sovereign rights over the Natuna Sea’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For this reason, we need to study various aspects to resolve this conflict, including historical perspectives, to offer insights or solutions for the Natuna Sea and Papua issues,” said the Defense Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the conflict in the Natuna Sea, Indonesia also faces issues in Papua. Papua continues to experience security and public order disturbances caused by Armed Criminal Groups (KKB). The conflict in this region is rooted in complex and varied issues, including attacks on civilians, security forces, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History illustrates how to build a nation and state into a large entity with a unified commitment amidst diversity. The Natuna Sea and Papua represent tests of Indonesia’s national integrity, each with different issues. The Natuna Sea faces sovereignty threats from external sources, while Papua’s problems are more internal, though sometimes influenced by external factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding Papua’s issues, Donny Ermawan stated that the government has enacted the Special Autonomy Law and built infrastructure, such as the road from Arfak to Manokwari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
