Jayapura – Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said stronger connectivity between regions is essential to accelerating development and economic growth across Papua.
AHY said improving infrastructure and transportation links would provide communities with better access to economic centers while facilitating the movement of people and the distribution of goods and services.
He noted that Papua’s vast geographical area and diverse regional characteristics require integrated infrastructure development tailored to the needs of each region.
“Connectivity needs to be continuously strengthened so that communities across Papua can gain better access to economic activities and public services,” AHY said in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, on Thursday.
According to AHY, the central government continues to coordinate with regional administrations to identify infrastructure needs and determine development priorities in Papua.
He said the approach is important as Papua currently comprises six provinces and 42 regencies and cities, each facing different geographical conditions and development challenges.
AHY highlighted road infrastructure as one of the key areas requiring continued development, as improved road networks can reduce travel times and facilitate the movement of people and commodities between regions.
In addition to road connectivity, the government is also seeking to strengthen maritime and air transportation links, including pioneer air services, particularly to reach areas with limited access.
Improved connectivity is expected to help reduce logistics costs, ensure smoother distribution of essential goods, and create greater opportunities for local economic activities to grow.
AHY is also scheduled to lead a coordination meeting on infrastructure development and connectivity involving regional leaders from across Papua. The meeting will provide an opportunity to gather regional aspirations and align infrastructure programs between the central and regional governments.
He emphasized that infrastructure development in Papua should be carried out continuously and equitably, while taking into account the specific needs of communities in each region.
AHY said stronger cooperation between the central and regional governments is important to ensure infrastructure development delivers tangible benefits to communities and supports sustainable economic growth across Papua.
