JAYAPURA, Indonesia – The Police Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026 has revealed new developments in the investigation into the shooting of three civilian employees of the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Office in Papua Pegunungan on Wednesday (September 9, 2026).
Head Of Public Relation of the Police Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, Chief Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., said on Thursday (September 10, 2026), that investigators had recovered several pieces of evidence believed to be related to the shooting during a crime scene examination.
“From the crime scene examination, we found evidence at the location. We found three cartridge cases, including two measuring 5.56 millimeters, which are ammunition for long-barreled firearms. We also found one 9-millimeter cartridge case, which is ammunition for a short-barreled firearm,” Yusuf said.
In addition to the cartridge cases, officers also found blood traces at the scene. The findings are being examined as part of the investigation into the sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
Police have also questioned a surviving victim. Based on the witness’s statement, investigators have obtained information regarding the characteristics of the suspected perpetrators.
“Following our investigation, the surviving victim was questioned and gave a statement at the Jayawijaya Police Station. We have obtained the characteristics of the perpetrators and have identified them. Our team has already launched a pursuit,” Yusuf said.
According to the preliminary witness account, the group suspected of carrying out the shooting consisted of approximately eight people. They were reportedly carrying two long-barreled firearms.
The witness was unable to confirm whether the group also possessed a short-barreled firearm. Police are continuing to investigate the matter based on the 9-millimeter cartridge case recovered at the crime scene.
“We will certainly pursue them. God willing, we will find them because we already have the characteristics of the perpetrators,” Yusuf said.
Yusuf emphasized that the Police Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026 continues to pursue those suspected of being involved in the shooting. He identified the suspected group as an armed criminal group.
Victims’ Bodies Being Returned to Their Hometowns
Meanwhile, arrangements are underway to return the victims’ bodies to their respective hometowns.
One of the victims, identified by the initials WB, has been transported from Wamena and is scheduled to continue the journey to Kupang.
“From Wamena, the body transited in Jayapura, Sentani, and then tonight it will depart for Makassar. From Makassar, it will first go to Jakarta. At around 2 a.m., it will depart for Kupang, to El Tari Airport, and it is planned to arrive at the airport tomorrow morning at around 7 a.m. local time,” Yusuf explained.
The bodies of the other two victims remain in Jayawijaya and are scheduled to be transported to their respective hometowns. One will be returned to Maumere, while the other will be transported to Toraja.
Yusuf also appealed to residents, particularly those in Jayawijaya Regency, to remain calm and not be easily provoked.
“We urge the public to remain calm. The Police Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026 has increased the number of personnel in Jayawijaya Regency. We have deployed additional personnel from Timika, with approximately 50 personnel being moved into the area,” he said.
The additional personnel were deployed to support police efforts to investigate the case and pursue those suspected of carrying out the shooting.
Yusuf also called on members of the public who have information regarding the whereabouts or identities of the suspected perpetrators to report it to the police.
“If members of the public have information related to this matter, they can report it to the police. We guarantee the confidentiality of the informants so that this case can be resolved quickly and the perpetrators can be arrested,” he said.
Investigation Continues
Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2026, Inspector General of Police Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., said the Police Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, together with the Jayawijaya Police, continues to investigate the case based on the crime scene examination, witness statements and evidence recovered at the scene.
“The investigation and inquiry are continuing to uncover this case and identify those responsible in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” Faizal said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2026, Chief Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., appealed to residents of Jayawijaya Regency to remain calm and not be easily provoked by unverified information.
“We call on the community to work together to maintain a safe and conducive situation and to report to the police if they have information that could assist in uncovering this case,” Adarma said.
