Central Papua Provincial Government Encourages Optimization of Regional Agricultural Potential

Jayapura – The Central Papua Provincial Government continues to encourage the optimization of regional agricultural potential, in line with national policy directions to expand food self-sufficiency.

“The Central Papua Provincial Government has consistently made the food sector the foundation of sustainable and equitable economic development,” said Central Papua Governor Meki Fritz Nawipa in a press release received by Antara in Jayapura on Wednesday.

According to Nawipa, his administration fully supports national policies in the food sector and strengthens the agricultural sector as a key pillar of regional food security.

He explained that in his speech during the main harvest and announcement of national food self-sufficiency in Jakarta on Wednesday, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that food self-sufficiency is a key pillar of national sovereignty, ensuring Indonesia’s independence from food imports from other countries.

“This success is the result of cross-sector synergy, from the central and regional governments, ministries and institutions, to the support of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in maintaining the stability of national food production, distribution, and security,” he said.

He added that the President also emphasized the importance of supporting farmers through strategic policies, including increasing the Government Purchase Price (HPP) for unhusked rice, simplifying fertilizer regulations, increasing the allocation of subsidized fertilizer, and eradicating food mafias and corrupt practices in the agricultural sector.

The Indonesian government officially announced that Indonesia has successfully achieved food self-sufficiency, particularly in rice, ahead of the initial four-year target, in just one year. This achievement is confirmed by official government data and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), with national rice production reaching 34.71 million tons, a significant increase compared to the previous period.
