Wamena — The Government of Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Pegunungan, hopes that traditional, religious, youth, and women leaders will work hand in hand to foster peace in the region.
Acting Regional Secretary of Jayawijaya Regency, Petrus Mahuse, said in Wamena on Sunday that maintaining peace and order in the region is not solely the duty of the security forces — the TNI and the Police — but the responsibility of all community elements.
“We hope that maintaining security and public order will not only be the task of the TNI and Police, but also of all elements of society — traditional, religious, youth, and women leaders — so that the region can truly remain conducive,” he said.
According to him, all sectors of society must work together and maintain good communication so that conflicts and disturbances in the region can be prevented early.
“We, as the local government, hope that all elements of society will maintain communication and tolerance so that even the smallest potential disturbances can be contained, allowing all activities to run optimally,” he added.
He emphasized that Jayawijaya Regent Atenius Murib and Deputy Regent Ronny Elopere are strongly committed to eradicating all forms of crime, including the circulation of alcohol and narcotics.
“We hope this strong commitment receives full support from all parties, including traditional, religious, youth, and women leaders in Jayawijaya Regency, so that the region remains safe and the young generation can continue to develop well,” Mahuse said.
He added that the circulation of alcohol and narcotics must be prevented collectively to save the younger generation and help them become successful individuals in the future.
“People of Papua Pegunungan, especially those in the Baliem Valley (Jayawijaya), traditionally never consumed alcohol or narcotics — it was never part of our culture. These habits came from outside influences. Therefore, prevention and eradication must be carried out together,” he stated.
