JAYAPURA – In anticipation of the upcoming 2024 simultaneous regional elections, the Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua) is undertaking a series of security preparations. Law enforcement agencies across the region are actively preparing to address potential disturbances during the election period.
As part of these efforts, Polda Papua organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Tuesday, August 20, at the old Rastra Samara Hall in Jayapura. The discussion centered on the potential for violence during the election and the strategies that will be employed to ensure public safety and order.
In his remarks, the Director of Criminal Investigation (Dir Reskrimum) at Polda Papua emphasized the importance of identifying possible security threats and the measures that will be taken by the police to mitigate these risks. He called on religious leaders, community representatives, and traditional figures to provide input on potential security concerns, not only in the main province of Papua but also in Central Papua, the Papua Highlands, and Southern Papua.
“We encourage our partners from various sectors to share their insights on potential security challenges that may arise across Papua’s provinces during the election period,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the head of the FGD team from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police Headquarters (Bareskrim Mabes Polri) highlighted the objective of gathering information and developing a comprehensive understanding of the potential for violence during the 2024 elections. “This initiative is expected to contribute positively by enhancing our data and understanding of security risks in the Papua region,” he concluded.
